Using UNDR: What You Need To Know

Will UNDR work in my yard?

UNDR tests are designed to analyze typical soil material from any geographic or geological region. This includes dense clay soils, sandy areas, rich fertile fields, dry dusty lands and everything in between.

Each test analyzes only the specific sample submitted and may not represent broader property conditions.

When will I get my results?

We usually run our tests within 4-6 business days of receiving samples. We’ll post your results to your UNDR account portal as soon as they’re ready. UNDR Premium customers get expedited processing within 1-2 business days of receiving samples.

Is UNDR safe for kids?

UNDR can be a great all-family activity, and even supervised little kids can help. It’s important to follow soil sampling instructions carefully to get reliable results.

Never allow kids or pets to play or dig in areas where you suspect toxins or contaminants. UNDR testing does not determine health risks or safety. If you have concerns about soil safety, consult qualified environmental and health professionals before collecting samples or allowing contact with soil.

What if I want to test more than one area?

UNDR Premium and Plus kits allow you to analyze up to two different soil samples for specified components. UNDR basic kits allow you to analyze one soil sample. Please see individual product pages for specific kit inclusions. For larger-scale testing, we recommend purchasing multiple kits. Remember to document where you dig! If you’re not sure which kit(s) to purchase for your needs, contact us and we’ll be happy to help.

Each test analyzes only the specific sample submitted and may not represent broader property conditions.

What happens to my soil samples after you test them?

We retain a remnant of each sample for 30 days in case anything comes up. After that,
we responsibly discard them.

Can you re-run my sample?

In rare cases, we can re-run samples within 30 days of receiving them. A small re-run fee may apply. We responsibly discard sample remains after 30 days.

Can I compare results over time?

Yes! Testing repeatedly over time is a fun way to observe changes in your land. Past reports will remain available in your portal so you can track trends or explore seasonal changes.

Note: Each test analyzes only the specific sample submitted and does not determine the presence, absence, or extent of contamination or other conditions across your property. Any interpretation of trends or changes should be made in consultation with qualified environmental or geological professionals.

What should I do if my report shows precious metals, oil or contamination?

UNDR kits are a fun and educational first step in understanding your land, and are not intended to provide professional advice. In addition to data about your land samples, your report will include suggestions for reputable resources and ways to find professionals to advise on next steps.

UNDR provides an informational analysis of your specific soil sample only. Results are educational and do not constitute professional geological, environmental, legal, health, or safety advice. UNDR does not determine the presence of economically recoverable deposits, contamination, regulatory compliance, health risks, or property conditions. Consult qualified professionals, including geologists, environmental consultants, and legal advisors, before making any decisions regarding your property.

What makes an UNDR report different from a traditional soil test?

Traditional soil tests are built for agriculture and focus on a small set of nutrients. They tell farmers what to fertilize—not homeowners what they should know.

UNDR reports go much further—testing for over 90 different elements/substances and turning complex data into a clear, engaging, and easy-to-understand visual experience. Instead of just numbers, you get real insight into what’s in your soil sample and why you should care.

Science And Accuracy

What elements can you test for?

Depending on the kit you purchase, we can test for any element on the periodic table between atomic number 8 (oxygen) and 92 (uranium) in your soil sample. This includes gold, silver, platinum, rare earth elements, and heavy metals. We can also test for crude oil and petroleum contaminants like gasoline and motor oil.

Detection of any element does not indicate economic value, commercially recoverable deposits, contamination levels, regulatory compliance, or health risks.

Can your tests tell the difference between potentially valuable crude oil and oil-based contamination?

Generally, yes. Crude oil is chemically different from motor oil, diesel, gasoline, etc., so our tests are normally able to distinguish between the two. However, this analysis relies on complex, qualitative science, so in rare cases clear differentiation may not be achievable. If this is the case for your sample, we’ll let you know in your report.

Detection of any oil or petroleum does not indicate economic value, commercially recoverable deposits, contamination status, regulatory compliance, or health risks. Consult qualified professionals for any such determinations.

How accurate are the results?

Your result is accurate for the specific soil sample you send us. We use lab-grade instruments and recognized analytical methods. Every result in your report comes with its own detection limit and margin of error, so you can see how precise that particular measurement is. Precision varies by element, method, and the condition of the sample — there's no single number that applies across the board, which is why we disclose it per result. See a sample report <hyperlink> to get a feel for the ranges you'll see.

One thing to keep in mind: our results describe the sample you submitted, not your entire property. Soil composition can vary a lot across a single piece of land, so a clean sample from one corner doesn't guarantee the same result elsewhere — and vice versa.

Are you an EPA-certified lab?

No. UNDR is not an EPA-certified environmental laboratory. Our reports are for informational and educational purposes only and do not determine regulatory compliance, environmental contamination, health risks, or safety. Our testing cannot be used for environmental assessments, real estate transactions, regulatory reporting, legal proceedings, or any purpose requiring certified environmental testing. See our Disclaimer for details.

Will my report interpret health risks or give land usage approvals?

No. We explain what your numbers mean in plain English and share typical ranges and tips. If your report shows deviation from average soil, we’ll suggest next steps by pointing you toward reputable resources. View a sample report here.

UNDR does not provide medical, health, safety, environmental, geological, legal, or regulatory advice or determinations. We do not assess health risks, safety, contamination levels, regulatory compliance, or land usage approvals. We provide educational context about detected elements, including typical ranges for reference only. Results apply only to your specific sample and do not characterize your property. If your report shows elements you wish to investigate further, consult qualified professionals, including environmental consultants, geologists, health professionals, and legal advisors as appropriate.

Can UNDR locate the source of elements found in my sample?

No. UNDR analyzes the composition of the specific soil sample submitted. Our testing does not determine the source, origin, distribution, or extent of any element across a property. Determining the source of elements in soil requires professional geological or environmental investigation.
